Geostatistics in the characterization of a sedimentary deposit

Objectifs :
● The course is designed as the evaluation of a real deposit, from field measurements (logs, seismic) down to reserve estimation.
● Throughout this study, the relevant geostatistical concepts are reviewed, recalling their theoretical basis together with their advantages and limitations.

Contenu :
The case study is performed on a layer-cake deposit, composed of several litho-stratigraphic units. The main boundary depths are measured in wells and the corresponding markers are picked from seismic (in time). Within each unit, the well logs are interpreted in geological features (facies …), rock properties (porosity) and economical characteristics (grade, concentration …).

Throughout the case study flowchart, the following concepts will be addressed:
● Data analysis: sampling, support, distribution, correlation between variables
● Geometry: determination of the 2-D boundary surfaces
- Spatial characteristics of marker depths (variograms, variogram map, multivariate, model fitting)
- Mapping of the surfaces (estimation, (co-)kriging, external drift, colocated co-kriging)
● Geological environment (stratigraphy, flattening)
● Filling a homogeneous 3-D unit with a property
- Statistical inference of variograms in 3-D (compositing, anisotropy)
- Base case (3D kriging)
- Simulations in gaussian framework (gaussian transform, simulation techniques: SGS, Turning Bands, conditioning)
● Filling a heterogeneous 3-D unit
- Facies or grade classes (indicators, rock type relationship)
- Simulations (Truncated Plurigaussian (Pixels); Boolean (Objets); Meandering channels (Genetic)

All these concepts will be covered through examples belonging different domain of applications: oil, mining, environment …
Each concept will be practiced using the software ©ISATIS.

All the documents presented during the course will be provided on a CD.
A field trip will be organized to discover the famous “Grès de Fontainebleau” as a practical introduction to the simulation of heterogeneous sedimentary unit.
